Going strong at 97 years old, she has the longest career of any entertainer at over 80 years. I first fell in love with Betty White when I saw that show she produced when old people play pranks on young people “Off Their Rockers.” In that particular episode, a grandmother needsed some youngsters to teach her how to text-so she could communicate with her college-aged boyfriend. I also adored her in “Hot in Cleveland” where three actresses from Los Angeles get stranded in Cleveland when their plane crashes, and they decide to stay because men have the strange quality of being attracted to women their own ages, and her character Elka Ostrovsky steals every scene she is in.
Betty White grew up during the Great Depression and got her start in radio and game shows. She was the first woman to produce a sitcom and was the oldest host ever of Saturday Night Live when she hosted in 2010. She has 8 Emmys, 3 SAG awards, and a Grammy (for spoken word) among her many honors.
She is also an animal rights activist and works with many animal welfare organizations. She has said that when she was a girl she wanted to be a forest ranger, but women were not allowed to go into that when she was growing up.
Here are some memorable Betty White quotes:
“Animals are near and dear to my heart, and I’ve devoted my life to trying to improve their lives.”
“People say, ‘But Betty, Facebook is a great way to connect with old friends.’ Well at my age, if I want to connect with old friends I need a Ouija board”
“Get at least eight hours of beauty sleep, nine if you’re ugly.”
“That is one crazy bitch” (on Sarah Palin)
“Ryan Reynolds looks so #$% handsome in his red leather suit. I give it four Golden Girls.” (on Deadpool)
“I have a two story house and a very bad memory” (on excercise)
“I love children. The only problem with children is they grow up to be people. And I just like animals better than I like people, it’s that simple.”
And finally, a tip for living a long life- “Try not to die.”
